This Haynesville Shale formation was created during the Jurassic Period and resides under southwestern Arkansas, northwest Louisiana, and East Texas. This formation has recently become a prime target for completion of horizontal wells. The popularity of this shale boomed in 2008 when mineral owners in the United States began to share information with each other about the oil and gas production industry.
This is no surprise since the formation covers an average of 9,000 square miles and rests between 200 and 300 feet thick.
This shale is unique to leasers and operating facilities because Haynesville is a major producer of natural shale gas. Wells have been drilled successfully between 10,000 and 13,000 feet, and produces more natural gas at deeper depths in its southern region.
The Haynesville Shale produces more than 7,540 cubic feet of new-well gas per rig, per day. It is currently a prime target for the completion of existing horizontal wells.
It is estimated that there are between 35,000 and 50,000 wells that are still able to be drilled across the expanse of the formation.
