The Niobrara is one of the largest shales and stretches across the states of South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. Although this shale formation is large, most of the drilling activity occurs in the state of Colorado. The Niobrara is really a combination of two basins in one, with the other being The DJ Basin.
This play produces crude oil and liquid rich gas. It is a shale/chalk/sandstone formation that is productive at depths of 5,000 feet and 8,500 feet.
When looking at the natural gas production in the Niobrara, it is no surprise that companies have aggressively implemented mining programs and continue to pursue the area as one of the largest plays in the United States.
The natural gas production at the Niobrara Formation is around 4.6 billion cubic feet per day, with oil production rising from 287,000 to 476,000 barrels per day in January of 2017.
